Size the unfurl card—not the profile cover

When someone shares your URL, apps show a wide ~1.91:1 card. Export a dedicated share image, keep the headline centered, and do not reuse a Facebook cover strip.

These cards power URL unfurls. Covers and banners are different jobs—see the cover chart if you are editing a profile header.

The share card shows before anyone opens the page

A practical Open Graph default—1200×630—works for Facebook, many Slack clients, and most large link cards. X often uses 800×418 or 1200×628; keeping the headline in the center usually covers both.

Threads leans slightly taller at 1200×600. Substack’s social preview is a different shape (~14:10). When in doubt, start with 1200×630 and re-crop the outliers.

Do not upload a link card as a Page cover or X header. Those surfaces use different ratios and avatar overlaps—use the cover photo chart instead.

Quick picks

Match the job to the row so you do not export the wrong ratio.

  • Setting og:image on a website → Open Graph 1200×630.
  • Facebook shared URL → Link preview guide (same habit).
  • X summary card → Link card guide; keep type in the center.
  • Newsletter social tile → Substack or Beehiiv preview guides.
  • Editing a profile header → Cover photo sizes—not this page.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Open Graph image be?

A practical primary size is 1200×630 (~1.91:1). Keep the headline in the center band.

Is a link preview the same as a cover photo?

No. Link previews are URL share cards. Covers are profile or Page headers with different crops.

Why does my unfurl show old art?

Caches linger. After you swap og:image, use platform debuggers or a new URL path until clients refresh.

Can I crop OG images here?

Yes. Download the JPG/PNG, host it on HTTPS, then set the absolute URL in your meta tags.
