Crop Threads for the feed, carousel, avatar, or link card

Photo posts and carousels want a tall 4:5 frame. Link unfurls need a wide 1200×600 card. Your profile photo is a tiny circle beside every reply.

Real Threads publish ratios side by side. Pick the surface, then crop to that artboard.

Text-first feed, four different files

Threads is built around conversation, but images still compete for attention next to captions and quotes. A clean 1080×1350 photo reads better than a stretched cover strip or a landscape OG card forced into the feed.

Carousels need every slide on the same ratio as the first—usually 4:5. When you share a URL, clients often pull a wide ~1200×600 preview. That card is not the same artboard as a 4:5 post.

The avatar is another job. Corners disappear under a circle mask, and reply threads show the face at a very small size. Instagram feed exports often transfer well at 4:5—still re-check inside Threads.

Quick picks

Match the task to the guide so you do not export the wrong ratio.

  • Attaching a photo to a Threads post → Feed post at 4:5, not a wide OG card.
  • Swipeable multi-image set → Carousel; match every slide to the first ratio.
  • Sharing a URL with a rich preview → Link preview at 1200×600 on the destination page.
  • Only updating the circle beside your name → Profile picture; keep the face inside the guide.
  • Coming from Instagram → Often reusable 4:5 pixels; still preview inside Threads.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Threads posts be?

1080×1350 (4:5) is the practical photo default. Square 1080×1080 also works when the scene is already square.

What size is a Threads link preview?

A practical card is 1200×600 (2:1). Set it via Open Graph / social preview on the destination URL.

What size is a Threads profile picture?

Upload a square—try 640×640. Threads shows it as a circle on the profile and in reply threads.

Can I reuse Instagram post crops?

Often yes for 4:5 feed photos. Confirm framing inside Threads before you rely on the same file everywhere.

Does Threads have a banner or cover photo?

No. Unlike X or Facebook, Threads does not give you a wide profile header. Update the circular profile picture, attach a 4:5 image to a post, or ship a 1200×600 link card for URLs.

Can I crop Threads sizes in the browser?

Yes. The guides on this hub include an in-browser crop—files stay on your device until you download and upload to Threads yourself.
