Upload a square; design for the circle

Almost every network displays your face as a circle (or rounded tile). Export a clear square, keep the subject centered, then open the guide for that platform’s preferred pixels.

Upload a square; design for the circle

Networks differ by a few hundred pixels, but they share one rule: upload a square and keep the face inside the circle that shows up in comments and chats.

A group shot with you in the corner fails after the circular crop. Tiny text around the edge disappears at comment size. Prefer a clear head-and-shoulders or a simple mark that still reads next to a reply.

Covers and banners are a different job—open the cover photo chart when you are refreshing the strip behind the avatar, not this page.

Quick picks

Match the job to the row so you do not export the wrong ratio.

  • Instagram, Facebook, Threads, WhatsApp → start at 640×640 centered.
  • X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitch → 800×800 square masters travel well.
  • Discord server or user avatar → 512×512; animated GIF rules differ on Nitro.
  • Google Business logo → 720×720; keep the mark honest vs the storefront.
  • Only changing the circle → this chart. Refreshing the header → Cover photo sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a profile picture be?

Upload a square. 640×640 or 800×800 covers most major apps. The display is usually a circle—center the face.

Why do corners of my photo disappear?

Platforms mask avatars as circles or rounded squares. Anything outside that mask is cut—re-crop with the subject in the middle.

Can I reuse one avatar everywhere?

Often yes if it is a clean square. Export once at 800×800 or larger, then downscale per guide if a network prefers a smaller upload.

Is a cover photo the same as a profile picture?

No. Covers are wide banners. Profile pictures are small circular (or rounded) identity marks.
