Size specs

Publish at 1640×856 when you can. Profile/Page covers (1640×624) are shorter—stretching them into a Group header warps the art.

Groups are not Pages with a shorter banner

A Facebook Group cover is a wide header members see when they open the Group. The practical export many admins use is 1640×856—same width family as Page covers, but taller. Dropping a 1640×624 Page file into a Group stretches people and often clips the name line.

Members also see a smaller preview in search and recommendations. Soft files, microscopic rules text, or a logo parked only on the far edge fail first in those tiny cards. Design for the small view, then confirm the full header still holds.

Group covers do not use the same avatar overlap choreography as a personal profile. Still leave a quiet lower band and side margins—UI chrome, join buttons, and slight mobile re-frames can nibble at the edges.

If you manage both a Page and a Group for the same brand, keep two exports. Shared photography is fine; shared finished pixels usually are not.

Good vs weak crop

Same wide frame—placement decides whether phones still see your message.

Looks intentional in the Group

  • True 1640×856 framing
  • Name and logo in the safe band
  • Calm edges for mobile trim

Looks like a reused Page banner

  • 1640×624 Page cover stretched taller
  • OG 1200×630 forced into the header
  • Only branding on the far edge

Composition for Group covers

Lead with one clear subject: community photo, product, or bold brand field. Dense flyer screenshots compress poorly and look worse in recommendation cards.

Keep the Group name or short identity mark in the open middle. Side edges and the lower strip can shift slightly—do not put the only logo there.

  • Prefer one focal idea over a collage of six tiny photos.
  • Put long rules and announcements in the Group description, not on the banner.
  • Leave a quiet margin so slight re-crops do not clip faces.
  • Preview at thumbnail size before you save.

File requirements

Photos as JPG; hard-edged logos as PNG. Prefer sRGB. A clear 1640×856 export usually looks better after Facebook re-encodes than a noisy screenshot.

1640×624 Page covers or 1200×630 OG cards

Group vs Page, Event, and OG

Page covers are shorter (1640×624). Event covers land near 1920×1005. Link previews are 1200×630 share cards—not Group banners. Re-crop for each surface even when the photo is the same.

Common mistakes

  • Stretching a Page cover to fill the taller Group slot.
  • Uploading a link-preview (1200×630) image as the Group banner.
  • Packing the full welcome post onto the cover as tiny type.
  • Putting the only logo on an edge phones trim.
  • Shipping a soft upscale for a large community refresh.

How to use the crop tool

Upload a wide photo, choose Group cover (1640×856), drag until the name and subject sit inside the safe band, then download. Nothing is uploaded to our servers for cropping.

  • Use the compact preset only when the source is already soft.
  • Prefer JPG for photos and PNG for flat marks.
  • Re-check on a phone after you publish.

After you download

From this download to a live upload in a few minutes.

  1. 1

Download the 1640×856 JPG (or PNG for flat brand art) from the tool.

  2. 2

Open your Facebook Group → edit cover / camera control.

  3. 3

Upload the file and adjust position if Facebook shows a drag step.

  4. 4

Check the Group on your phone as a member would see it.

  5. 5

If the name sits under chrome or off the edge, re-crop and upload again.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Facebook group cover size in 2026?

1640×856 pixels is the practical recommended upload for Group covers. It is taller than the common 1640×624 profile/Page cover.

Is a Group cover the same as a Page cover?

No. Pages usually use 1640×624. Groups need a taller frame—re-crop instead of stretching the Page export.

Can I use my event cover on a Group?

Only after a fresh crop. Event covers are often 1920×1005. The photo can be shared; the finished pixels should not be forced.

Where should the Group name sit?

Keep the name and logo inside a centered safe band with margin from the edges so mobile trims and UI chrome do not hide them.

JPG or PNG for a Facebook Group cover?

JPG for photographs, PNG for hard-edged logos or flat type. Export sRGB and keep the file reasonably light.

Why does my Group cover look soft?

Usually a tiny source was upscaled, or a wrong-ratio file was stretched. Start from a clear original and export a true 1640×856 crop.

Is 1200×630 a Group cover size?

No. That size is for link previews. Use this page for Group banners and the link-preview guide for shared URLs.
